It is a poem from the novel Anandamath by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay. The poem was first performed by Rabindranath Tagore at the Indian National Congress party at the time of the British rule in India. It was later given the status of the national anthem of India.

The poem was written in the Bengali language. The first two lines of the poem are as follows:

Vande mataram shobno mukhe Vaat, aatma ke bare liye, aatma ke bare bhejo

These lines can be translated into English as:

I praise thee, mother, for giving me birth. I shall always be grateful to thee, mother, for my life.
